‘Couple’ jumps before train: Girl dies, boy hurt

A 16-year-old girl and her alleged lover attempted suicide by jumping before a running train near Pillar no 52-01 near the local railway station in Nabha late on Wednesday night.

The girl, Kamaljit Kaur, died on the spot, while her alleged lover Gurjit Singh, 22, was seriously injured. Gurjit was rushed to the local civil hospital from where the doctors referred him to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh.

His condition is stated to be critical. The duo belonged to Bimbri village. Gurjit said that he and Kamaljit were in a relationship, which was not accepted by their families.

Medical officer in the emergency ward of the civil hospital said that the police had brought a seriously injured Gurjit to the hospital. “However, keeping in view his critical condition, we have referred him to Chandigarh. The youth has received serious injuries on his arm and head,” he said.

The girl’s body was handed over to her parents after postmortem. Police have not registered any case against the boy so far, despite the girl being a minor. The girl’s kin refused to take any action, so no case was registered, Narotan said.
