The family of a Jalandhar-based accountant was left stunned on Tuesday evening when they found he was alive, 10 days after they cremated him.

Chandan Kumar, 31, of Anand Nagar had gone to Himachal Pradesh in his black Alto car on September 29 to collect payments from some dealers. A day later, his family received a call from the Haroli police station in Una, Himachal Pradesh, that a body was recovered from a charred car near the Punjab-Himachal border.

Chandan’s family rushed there and identified the car. The body, however, was badly charred and was difficult to be identified. The family brought back the body after its autopsy in Una and cremated it on October 1. The family also went to Haridwar to perform the last rites on October 4.

So it came as a shock as well as surprise to the family when Chandan’s younger brother Gulshan received a call from him on Dussehra evening informing them that he had been kidnapped and had managed to escape.

HT tried to talk to the family on Wednesday, but they had left for Una to bring back Chandan.

The Haroli police, meanwhile, quizzed Chandan after getting information about his reappearance.
