Finally, the milk dairies in Patiala city -- primarily responsible for choking the sewerage system with the waste they generate -- are set to move outside the city.

The Patiala municipal corporation would facilitate the dairy owners in relocation by helping them procure land.

The corporation has earmarked land in the Ablowal area of the city and it would be provided on a 'no-profit' basis to dairy owners.

On Sunday, the civic body decided to give plots to dairy farmers at the same rates as they had been acquired at. At present, the corporation has nearly 24 acres.

As per a latest survey conducted by the corporation, nearly 250 dairies would be relocated outside the city on a special circuit to be created by the corporation.

"Plots would be given to dairies with at least 10 to 12 milch cattle. The process of allotment would start after two months. A special meeting to elicit the views of dairy owners would be held in an open house at the end of this month to implement the project in a transparent manner," mayor Jaspal Pardhan told Hindustan Times. Under the chairmanship of the mayor, a special meeting was held on the project on Sunday in which the commissioner, joint-commissioner and other officials of the corporation were present.

Though shifting dairies had been considered seriously by the civic body in the past too, all plans had been stalled on one account or the other.
