A schoolgirl became the victim of a bus and a 35-year-old security guard was also killed, and at least four people got injured, in six road mishaps in the city within 24 hours till Thursday. Another fatal road accident was reported from Panchkula, and two college students died in a road crash near SAS Nagar, taking the toll to five.
Rajni Yadav, 17, a Class-12 student at a government school in Dhanas, was crushed under the rear wheel of a Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) bus while crossing the road outside the Sector-17 bus stand on Thursday morning. The bus driver has been booked. The girl's parents were shocked furthermore as she had bunked school. Having left home around 7 am for her school, which was just a few metres from her house, Rajni did not go inside. Daughter of a milkman, Rajni was staying with her grandparents at Milk Colony, Dhanas, to complete her studies, while her parents stay in Ambala. "As the school bell rung, Rajni waved to us and left, saying she would be back in a while," recalled Komal, a cousin of the victim who studies in the same school. Rajni's body was discovered an hour later in Sector 17. The girl, according to the police, was rushed to the PGIMER where she was declared brought dead as her head had been crushed under the rear wheel of the bus. Sources said she was probably talking over the phone and did not notice the bus, and the bus driver also took a blind turn without noticing her.
Her family was informed and rushed to the hospital. Father Jagdish Kumar said, "We had left Rajni here in Chandigarh so that she could complete her studies." She is survived by her parents and two brothers. Sonia, her mother, wailed, "I was told that school authorities had sent my daughter to Sector 17 (an allegation the school authorities denied). Please get my daughter back." Family said Rajni wanted to become a nurse or open a beauty parlour. She was reportedly to be married in June after her birthday.
Her class in-charge Kamlesh Kumari told HT, "As per our record, she was marked absent. We do not know why she went to Sector 17." The police booked the bus driver, Vijay Kumar, for causing death due to rash and negligent driving under sections 279, 337 and 304A of the IPC. CTU director TPS Phoolka said, "It is very unfortunate. We have marked an inquiry into the accident, and the driver has been placed under suspension with immediate effect. He has been working with CTU for more than four years and has not been involved in any accident earlier. We have also been giving regular training to the drivers to minimise such incidents."
In the other fatal incident in city, 35-year-old security guard Rohtas Singh died after his motorcycle was hit by the bus of a private educational institute near the Sector 45/46-49/50 roundabout on Wednesday evening. Rohtas worked in SAS Nagar. Police said the accused was yet to be identified and security camera footage was being examined. Sources said Rohtas was hit near a barrier while he was going towards his house in Burail, Sector 45. The bus, in a bid to move ahead, hit Rohtas from the side and dragged him along to a distance. A passerby called up the police and the victim was rushed to GMCH-32, then is referred to the PGIMER, where he declared brought dead. Rohtas was wearing a helmet. He is survived by his wife and two children. The police registered a case of rash driving.
In Panchkula, Umed Singh, 62, a resident of Pinjore, was crossing the road in Surajpur on Thursday to get to a juice shop when an SUV coming from Panchkula side hit him around 1pm. He was declared brought dead at General Hospital, Sector 6, and the police registered a case of causing death by negligence against the Pajero driver.
