Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD-Amritsar) chief Simranjit Singh Mann’s plan to honour Jagtar Singh Hawara, a convict in former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh’s assassination case, at the Patiala House court in Delhi was scuttled by the Delhi Police at Haryana’s Kundli border on Monday.
Hawara, who is lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail, had been ‘appointed’ Akal Takht jathedar at the radicals’ Sarbat Khalsa in Amritsar district on November 10 last year.
The police detained Mann and his supporters, who were in separate vehicles, under preventive arrests, SAD (Amritsar) secretary Jaswant Singh Mann told HT here.
Mann was scheduled to present a ‘siropa’, a sword and a ‘chola’ (long robe) to Hawara at the court, where the latter was to be brought for case proceedings. However, Hawara was not produced in the court, citing law and order problem. The case has been adjourned to January 22.
Earlier, SAD (Amritsar) activists led by Mann were confronted by the Haryana police at a gurdwara in Karnal, but they dispersed to form the cavalcade again till the Kundli border, Jaswant Mann said.
