The death toll due to dengue has gone up to five in the industrial city. Kiran (32), resident of Gandhi camp, succumbed to the dengue infection on Monday.
The victim had been suffering from dengue for the last one week. After her condition worsened, her family decided to rush her to Amritsar. However, she died on the way.
Sandeep Kumar, husband of the deceased, told Hindustan Times, “My wife was suffering from dengue fever for the last one week. She was being treated at the local dispensary.”
“Two days ago her platelet count fell to 55,000 and she had severe body ache. We took her to a private nursing home but her condition did not improve. Around 4 AM today, doctors referred her to Amritsar. She died on the way,” said Kumar.
On October 20, the civil surgeon, Gurdaspur, had issued a directive to all private practitioners to immediately inform the senior medical officer (SMO) about patients approaching them with dengue-like symptoms.
Though a week has passed, none of the private practitioners’ in the city has to provide information to the SMO in this regard.
Dr Sukhdeep Singh SMO, civil hospital, said, “The private practitioner should have informed me about the patient so that we could have set her blood samples to Gurdaspur for examination. This way we could have provided her better treatment.”

{{/usCountry}}Meanwhile, Ramesh Kumar, resident of Gandhi Camp and Raj Kumari, resident of Shastri Nagar, were admitted to civil hospital with dengue-like symptoms.
