Despite CCTV evidence, no FIR in Patiala hostel robbery

Police haven’t yet to registered a first information report (FIR) in the February 12 robbery at gunpoint that occurred at a paying guest hostel near Punjabi University even though the crime was recorded in a CCTV.

Instead, the police have taken in written from the victim, a student of the Punjabi University, that he doesn’t want an FIR in the case. HT had in its March 1 edition reported the news highlighting an unregistered case of robbery at gunpoint at a paying guest hostel that occurred on February 12 night.

Police did not register an FIR even after the CCTV footage was seen by two police officials along with some inmates of that hostel. Jaswinder Singh, the Sadar police station house officer, said the victim did not show willingness to register an FIR against the accused and gave us in writing. He claimed the investigation was underway and police had obtained photographs and videos of the criminals.

The hostel owners were also asked to ensure security, including installing CCTV cameras. Police also directed the owners to seek identity proofs before allowing any outsider to stay in their hostels.
