The director general school education, Punjab, Kahan Singh Pannu, has asked government primary, high and senior secondary schools to hold parent-teacher meetings on March 30 to give the result for the exams held in March.
However, these directions have left the school heads feeling jittery as they have not received funds from the district education department to organise these meetings. The funds are meant to provide refreshments to the parents, school staff and school management during the meetings.
The DGSE office had sent funds to the district education departments, to be further sent to government schools. However, schools are yet to receive them.
Parent-teacher meetings are organised to review the progress and educational advancement in government schools. The exercise aims at making an agreeable atmosphere for study in schools and also to bridge the gap between students and teachers, besides apprising the parents of the performance of their wards.
A school incharge, at the condition of anonymity, said, “This will be the fourth parent-teacher meeting that we will conduct in our school. But, we haven't received adequate funds from the education department. As per DGSE directions, every school will get Rs 800 to organise each meeting. But we have received only Rs 1,200 instead of Rs 3,200.”
Another government high school principal, who wished not to be named, said, “We are arranging the refreshments from our own pockets, as we have not received funds from the district education department. School teachers have contributed for these meetings to provide the result of the students to the parents.”

District education officer (elementary) Ranjit Singh was not available for comments.
