Amid stiff resistance by his family and supporters, the district administration on Saturday shifted fasting Sikh activist Surat Singh Khalsa to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, amid tight security.

In the evening, SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar, civil surgeon Dr Ranu Chhatwal besides police, administration and health officials reached Khalsa’s house at Hassanpur village on the pretext of enquiring about his health. Later, they took him to the PGI in an ambulance stationed outside the house.

Meanwhile, Khalsa’s relatives and followers resisted the move. They tried to stop the police from shifting him to hospital. The followers also raised slogans against the police.

Khalsa has been on a fast unto death since January 16 demanding the release of Sikh prisoners who have completed their sentence.

The police had tried to give medical aid to Khalsa on Thursday but he had refused. The pictures of Khalsa becoming weak had gone viral on social networking sites. Following this, the police had beefed up security in the village.

Meanwhile, doctors at the PGI said Khalsa’s condition is stable.
