To curb the stray cattle menace on city roads, the district administration is set to come up with an animal pound to keep stray cows, bulls and buffaloes.
The state government in a recent notification has directed the district administration to form a 10-member committee and find 25 acres of land to construct a cattle pound for stray animals.
The committee named District Animals Welfare Society has been formed and around 15 acres land has also been identified at Dham village near Kapurthala by the district development and panchayat office (DDPO) to construct the pound.
The notification says initial grant-in-aid would be provided by the rural development and panchayat department to start work on the cattle pound while the remaining amount will have to be arranged by the society.
The pound will provide shelter to around 2,000 stray animals and workers for caretaking and supervision. Funds for fodder and other requirements will be arranged from donators and volunteers.
Stray cattle have become a problem for the locals and cause frequent accidents on city roads. they are seen rummaging through garbage or fighting on streets, roads and in parks on State Gurdwara Road, Jaloh Khana Chowk, Char Bati Chowk, Shalimar Bagh and Railway Road.

{{/usCountry}}“This will help lessen road accidents which occur due to stray animals when they suddenly appear in front of vehicles, causing fatal accidents,” he said. He said construction on the cattle pound will start soon.
