DMCH conducts obesity support group meet

Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) conducted its exclusive obesity support group leaders' forum and BMI checkup camp at Dumra Auditorium on Sunday. Obesity patients operated 3-10 years back attended the meet, along with other patients, suffering from obesity.

Dr Ashish Ahuja, associate professor of surgery and bariatric surgeon at DMCH, said, "Nearly 30.2% women in Punjab suffer from obesity, which is second to Delhi where 34% women are obese.

Punjab has already come to the first position among all states, as far as obesity is concerned.

After bariatric surgery, diabetes mellitus type 2, blood pressure and sleeping disorders are cured in more than 90% of the patients. Patients, who face difficulty in walking, due to overweight are also cured after the surgery."

Around 100 patients attended the meeting and a BMI calculation machine was installed, and BMI of patients was calculated. Chief dietician Shaweta Batta also participated in the meeting and spoke about the nutrition before and after weight loss surgery.

DMCH additional medical superintendent Dr Sandeep Sharma honoured the patient support group leaders.

He said a special discount would be offered to all patients who were registered during the camp.

Some patients also shared their experiences during the camp.
