The railways has also terminated around 100 trains and diverted five trains to other routes for a week, said officials.

The double-laning work is being carried out to increase speed of trains, reduce congestion on the route and to overcome the shortage of tracks for multiple trains.

The officials said the majority of trains that had been cancelled include local passengers’ trains and long-route trains would not be affected.

Divisional railway manager, Ferozepur, Anuj Parkash said interlocking would help the railways set a panel of routes and circuit system of tracks.

He said almost 80% of the work had been completed on the Jalandhar-Jammu route.

The doubling of tracks on two bridges, one over the Ravi another over the Beas, would be completed by March 2017, the DRM said.
