A 27-year-old drug addict ended his life by jumping off the top floor of the local civil hospital on Monday morning. The deceased was identified as Harshdeep Singh, a resident of Falaud Kalan village.

The police registered a case of abetment of suicide against a private drug de-addiction centre in Dhuri.

Investigation officer (IO) Harinder Singh said the victim's father Veer Singh said that he had admitted his son to a drug de-addiction centre in Dhuri a few days ago.

According to Veer Singh's statement to the police, the victim was severely tortured and thrashed at the centre, following which he was admitted to the civil hospital in Sangrur on Sunday.

The police said Veer Singh also said that his elder son Manpreet Singh, who was also admitted to the same centre, told him about the ill-treatment of the centre authorities.

On Monday morning, Harshdeep jumped from the top floor of the hospital building and died immediately.

The body of the victim was handed over to the family after a postmortem.
