Following the claims of former director general of police (DGP) of prisons Shashi Kant of drug rackets being run from the jails in Punjab, the CIA staff-2 busted a similar drug peddling gang with the arrest of one on Tuesday.
The accused, Maninder Singh, 38, is a resident of Jamalpur. The police recovered 60gm heroin from his possession. According to the police, the recovered heroin costs `30 lakh in the international market.
The accused was arrested from Jeevan Nagar Chowk following a tip-off.
Sub-inspector Rajesh Kumar, incharge, CIA staff-2, claimed that Maninder had revealed that a drug racket was running from a jail. He added that Maninder also told the police that he used to get the packet of narcotics from unidentified persons and used to deliver them to drug addicts.
“He used to get `2,000 and 1gm heroin as commission. He told the police that he used to get phone call over his mobile phone from an unidentified person lodged in a jail. The caller used to put him on conference calls with another person, who used to deliver the consignment to Maninder. They also used to decide the place of meeting over the phone,” Kumar claimed.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) crime Jaswinder Singh said the police had retrieved the mobile phone number from the accused and were tracing its owner. The ACP said the police were trying to find out from which jail of Punjab the accused used to get phone calls. He claimed that more arrests were expected in the case.

{{/usCountry}}The ACP said the accused used to run a ration depot, but had left it, after he came in contact with the gang through one of his friends Nitish Kumar, who was arrested a few days ago for drug peddling.
It is pertinent to mention that former DGP Shashikant had made hue and cry over the drug racket being run from the jails, but neither the government nor the police take action.
