'Education can help check crime against women'

Education not only enhanced the status of women in society but also helped check crime against them. This was the view on Wednesday from a national seminar on curbing discrimination and crime against women. The University Grants Commission had sponsored the event organised at DAV College here by its department of social sciences.

The speakers included former health minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla; Jyotsna Kapoor, director of Community Friendly Movement, New Delhi; Inderjit Kaur, president of the All-India Phingwara Society; Joginder Singh, chairman of the Namdhari Chair of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar; SD Gajrani, former head of the department of history at Punjabi University, Patiala; college principal KN Kaul; and seminar director HS Walia.

"The objective was to find out the reasons for discrimination and crime against women," said Walia. In her address, Chawla blamed materialistic pursuits and western lifestyle for moral degradation. The keynote speaker, Jyotsna Kapoor, said economic empowerment and education could enhance the status and dignity of women in society. Inderjit Kaur supported the view that education promoted moral health and reduced the crime rate. "Religion can also help reduce crime against women," she said.

Joginder Singh delivered the valedictory address and Vishav Bandhu, convener of the seminar, proposed the vote of thanks.
