The district education department’s ambitious project to adopt English-medium teaching in all government primary schools has failed to take off even after five months due to the lackadaisical attitude of the officials.
The idea was floated with an aim to increase enrolment in government schools and it was approved at a meeting with director public instructions (primary education) Pankaj Sharma on May 2 this year. Under the project, primary school students will be able to learn Math and Science in English medium, which was being taught in Punjabi until now. However, barring a few schools, most have failed to make the switch as officials failed to execute the ‘idea’ properly. According to information, many schools from the district had shown interest in switching to the English medium.
Head teacher of a government primary school said that it was a welcome step as it would increase the strength of the students in government schools. “But the problem is that such projects never get implemented. I hope that officials make a serious effort to execute it.”

{{/usCountry}}“Frankly, I do not think, it will ever get started. Officials are not serious about education anymore,” he said. District resource person (DRP) special training and books, Somnath, said that PRAVESH project was started in the schools because of which this project came to a halt.
He said, “I am hopeful that in the next session, the idea will prosper and the schools will teach the students in English.”
