For 26-year old Seema Bhatti, a resident of Nanak Pindi village, the election and her decision to contest is an attempt to take her desitny in her own hands, with the support of people.

"Our ex-sarpanch has done nothing for development. As a consensus candidate for the youth of my village, I came here to file my nomination for sarpanch. I hope this is turning point," said Seema, a daughter of an soldier.

"If I get elected, I will focus on ensuring education for all in the village," she added.

34-year old Paramjeet Kaur has decided to contest to get recognition to women. "It is necessary for the women to come outside their homes and take active part in village matters," she said.

57-year old Nirmal Singh, a former sarpanch of the Bhote Saprai village, hopes his past development record will do the trick for him. " I have spent my life to solve the villagers' problems. There is no question of losing this election," he said.

People were seen standing in queues for filing their nominations till 7pm at some places in the district. In Shahkot, 323 nominations have been filed for Sarpanch and 1,203 nominations for panches, while in Lohian Khas constituency, 302 nominations were received for sarpanches and 897 nominations for panches, sources said.
