The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday asked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to expel party’s Rupnagar MLA Amarjit Singh Sandoa from the party and also demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as well as registration of an FIR in a sodomy complaint filed against him in 2012.

In a statement, former minister and SAD spokesman Maheshinder Singh Grewal said AAP leader Amandeep Bains has revealed that there were serious charges of sodomy pending against Sandoa. “The Punjab government to register an FIR against the MLA,” said Grewal.

Besides, deportation of Sandoa from Canada was a clear message to the AAP leadership as to how there was zero tolerance for crime against women, he said.

“The AAP has also always claimed to stand for woman safety publicly, but it refused to talk and take action against Sandoa when he assaulted and outraged the modesty of his landlady. Now, even charges have been framed against the AAP MLA by a court. It is condemnable that while the Canadian government has taken notice of these developments and deported Sandoa and his colleague Kultar Singh Sadhwan, the AAP had failed to act against the legislator,” said Grewal.

Stating that the deportation was an insult to Punjab as well as the entire community, Grewal said the AAP leadership was responsible for this “because tainted persons like Sandoa were given party tickets”.

“The only way forward for the AAP and its chief Arvind Kejriwal is to expel Sandoa from the party and seek his resignation from the Vidhan Sabha,” he said, adding the Punjab AAP unit should also clear its stand on the issue.
