The SAD-BJP combine- ruled Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) is banking on the installation of new tubewells to play it as development card to garner votes in the upcoming parliamentary elections. After bad roads had become a major cause of concern for the ruling combine, the civic body is fast moving the process to install 39 tubewells which will be installed in different wards of the city.
The work orders for installing 24 tubewells have been sanctioned. Of these, work on four tubewells has already started.
Sources in the civic body said as per the work orders given to contractors, all 24 tubewells have to be installed before the state goes to polls on April 30.
Even as all eyes were set on the bad condition of roads, the SAD-BJP combine’s move to install tubewells is set to earn it some relief so that it could manage to show something on the development front.
The project of installation of tubewells was stalled for many years citing fund crunch.
In the first phase, the tubewells are being installed in ward29 (Khodian Mohalla) and ward 15 (Satnam Nagar), ward number 20 (Vikrampura) and ward-54.
MC’s additional commissioner of operation and maintenance wing PS Jaggi said, “Keeping in view the impending summer, the civic body decided to install these tubewells in the city so that people do not face water shortage. We have given the maintenance contract of these tubewells to those who will take care of them in case of damage.”

The installation work for Garha, Mota Singh Nagar, Mata Rani Chowk, Baba Budha Ji Enclave, Adarsh Nagar, Defence Colony Urban Estate phaseI, Preet Nagar, Kishanpura, Muftian Mohalla and Malkan Mohalla will start next week.
