When the petition filed by the victim's parents, seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case, came up for hearing before the bench headed by justice Jitendra Chauhan, the state government's counsel informed that the next date of hearing in the trial court was on January 16.

On this, the court adjourned the case for the next hearing on January 17.

The state police had filed the chargesheet against all 20 accused in the case, lodged in the central jail, Faridkot, before the judicial magistrate first class (JMIC), then duty magistrate, since there was winter vacation in the district courts. Had there been a delay of 10 more days in filing of the chargesheet, some of the accused who had been behind bars for around 80 days would have been entitled for release on bail.
