A day after a Moga youth allegedly committed suicide in the central jail, Faridkot, his relatives and acquaintances held a protest dharna in front of city police station-2 here on Wednesday and accused the prison authorities of foul play.

Deepak Kumar had allegedly committed suicide in the jail on Tuesday. He was arrested by the Moga police two week back for abetment of suicide after his wife Suman killed ended her life at Sadha Wali Basti, Moga, on June 15.

Besides Deepak, his mother and sister were also named in the case. After his arrest in Moga, Deepak was sent to the Faridkot central jail.

Though a judicial inquiry is already underway in the suicide case, the protesters alleged that Deepak died due to his alleged torture in the jail. They declined to accept his body and demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident. The protesters also demanded that the inquiry be handed over to an officer outside Moga and Faridkot districts.

Following the death of a prisoner on April 20, the Faridkot central jail had witnessed massive protest by the prisoners.

The jail authorities claimed that after he was shifted to the Faridkot prison, Deepak Kumar was in a pensive mood. The jail authorities refuted the allegations levelled by Deepak's family.
