More than 400 activists of 17 farmer and labourer organisations, including women, staged a dharna opposite the offices of XENs (city and sub-urban) of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) demanding 16-hour uninterrupted power supply to the agriculture sector.
Addressing the protest rally, leaders rued that the farmers were not getting eight-hour supply as promised by the government.
PSPCL supplies six-hour power to the farm sector due to overloading of the system. They demanded that eight hours' uninterrupted power supply be ensured to the farm sector and compensation be given in case of line faults.
CPM (Pasla) leader Gurnam Singh Sanghera said that load extension should be free, as it has become a compulsion of farmers adding that load extension at the rate of per horse power should continue for the entire year unless the free scheme is introduced.
Manohar Singh Gill demanded that small farmers be given power connection at government rates as promised.
Pendu Mazdoor Union president Tarsem Peter demanded that the increase in security for domestic power connection decision of advance bill be withdrawn.
They demanded that landless labourers should be given free power without any preconditions and all arrears should be written off. A memorandum was also presented to the XENs.
