After protesting for three consecutive days outside the office of the Amritsar deputy commissioner for the fulfillment of their demands, the farmers and farm labourers lifted their protest on Sunday evening, warning to come out on the roads again with intensified demonstrations if their demands are not accepted and implemented at the earliest.
The protesting farmers and farm leaders lifted their protest at around 7 pm .
Meanwhile, addressing the gathering earlier during the protest, the farmers and farm labourers’ leaders reiterated their demands that they have been raising since the beginning the protest.
The protesters have demanded waiver of loans of farmers in debt to curb suicides, revocation of draconian land laws, free power supply to villages, compensation for basmati purchased for less than Rs 5,000 per quintal, Rs 40,000 per acre compensation for cotton crop damaged due to pest attack, jobs for kin of suicide victims, and a pension of Rs 5,000 per month for farmers and farm labourers.
The farmers and labourers on protest also demanded ownership rights for the settlers, streamlining the public distribution system for the poor, availability of seeds at discounted rates, availability of things of daily use and revocation of anti-farmer policies.
They demanded restoration of subsidies, while charging the Central government with bowing before the western countries during the World Convention at Nairobi, Kenya. They said that because of this the government had decided to discontinue the subsidies and other benefits extended to the agrarian community from 2017 onwards.
