Activists of farmer unions on Friday staged a protest on rail tracks near Manawal railway station, about 10km from amritsar, disrupting rail traffic on the Amritsar-New Delhi route.
Starting their dharna at about 2pm, they were still protesting at the spot at the time of filing of this report. Various trains, including Shan-e-Punjab, were stopped as a result.
The farmers were irritated over irregular supply of electricity. As a result of the agitation by hundreds of farmers, rail passengers faced lots of inconvenience since many had to de-board at Manawala railway station and walk to their destinations.
The Amritsar-New Delhi Shatabdi Express was scheduled to leave at 5pm, but farmers had not lifted their dharna at the time of filing of the report.
Farmer union leader Kanwalpreet said that the Punjab government had promised a power-surplus state but actually farmers were hardly getting any electricity supply and the standing crop was this affected.
The state government had failed to fulfill its promises and they had no other option but to protest, he added.
