A man and his son, who run a finance company here, were arrested on Saturday for trying to kill one of their own clients.
The incident caused panic in the locality and agitated shopkeepers and local residents took to the streets.
Sensing trouble, police officials including the deputy superintendent of police, Raj Kumar, rushed to the spot to pacify the crowd.
Police said Rajibir Singh and his son, Deepanshu, residents of Bahadurgarh in Jhajjar district, had given a loan of Rs 40,000 to Sonu.
But after repaying Rs 20,000, Sonu shifted places from Bahadrugarh to Karnal to escape the pressure from the financers to repay the full amount, they added.
In the morning, both parties allegedly entered into an argument at Sarafa Bazar locality of the city, where Sonu works at a shop. DSP Kumar said the accused fired two rounds, but missed and were soon apprehended by shopkeepers.
Later, he added, the duo allegedly tried to abduct to Sonu's father, Satish Kumar, who works at another shop in the same market. However, this time again, Singh and his son failed as they were overpowered by people.
"The weapon and the car used in the attempted crime have been recovered," the DSP said, adding that the allegations of loan and its repayment were also being investigated. Kumar also said the police is investigating if the duo has a criminal background.
