Investigating officer Charanjeet Singh said preliminary investigations had revealed that Jarnail and the woman addict Parminder Kaur Pinky had entered into an argument over buying de-addiction medicines when they were standing in a queue in the hospital on Saturday morning. However, the matter was resolved with the intervention of others standing near the queue.

Charanjeet said on Saturday evening, when Jarnail was standing in the Jassara Colony, the accused Pinky, who was also a resident of the same colony, her husband Mohammad Farooq, and other unidentified assailants had attacked him.

When Rattan had intervened, the attackers had hit him on the head with a baton, after which he sustained serious head injuries and became unconscious.

Charanjeet said Rattan was admitted to the civil hospital where he succumbed to injuries on Saturday night.
