Female two-wheeler riders shy away from helmets

Though helmet is for their safety but female two-wheeler riders largely continue to be without helmets in the district.In most parts of the district , college and school-going girls and even female teachers could be seen travelling without helmets.

At times, not only male but female riders could be seen talking on mobile phones, a leading cause of accidents and fatalities on road.Rupinder Kaur, a student of local Mata Gujri College said there is an opinion that females think the helmet is an unnecessary accessory and feel uncomfortable with it.

She said this is a misplaced notion and the authorities need to take action against such people and raise awareness among them.

Manpreet of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College said earlier she used to wear a helmet, but due to that, her hair always got clumsy, so now I don't wear it.

Ruchika of RIMT, Mandi Gobindgarh said she feels uncomfortable while wearing a helmet.Ranjit Singh, a student of local Baba Zorawar Singh Fateh Singh Senior Secondary Public School said most females are seen violating the rules and the traffic police officials mostly ignore it.

When asked to comment on the issue, Prof. Bikramjit Singh Sandhu, Head of Commerce Department of Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib said that helmets are necessary for everyone to wear, even girls, as they act as saviours for people at the time of accidents.

He said helmet is for safety of not only men but also women. Local traffic police officials denied that they have lenient view towards fair sex.
