The deceased is survived by three children, two sons, and a daughter.

According to his relatives, Ajit Singh, who was elected as village sarpanch in 2010, was under a lot of stress as some people were continuously blackmailing him to pay them a hefty amount of money to settle a court case.

"No sooner did he become the sarpanch, some villagers framed him in case pertaining to irregularities in MGNREGS. However, in one of the cases, after a thorough probe conducted by the district deputy commissioner (DC), Ajit was exonerated from all the charges.

The DC even directed the authorities to reinstate Ajit a sarpanch. However, some people never allowed that thing to happen," the deceased's father-in-law, Nihal Singh, said.

Singh alleged that some of the witnesses in the court case were pressing him to pay them a big amount of money to get him acquitted from all the charges.

"They knew that he was a big landlord. Therefore, they were demanding hefty amount to settle the matter," he said.
Nihal Singh alleged that some of the witnesses in the case continuously kept "blackmailing" him that they will go against him if money is not paid to them.

Police have registered a case of suicide and started investigations.

A 55-year-old farmer had allegedly committed suicide on Thursday morning by hanging himself from a tree on the outskirts of Singhran village in the district, following loss of crops due to recent rains.
