The City Police have booked four cops deployed at the Vallah Police Chowki for murder after a 21-year-old-detained at the post since Saturday without any record or entry in any register — was found dead inside the post on Sunday afternoon.
The news of the victim’s — identified only as Tinku — death inside the chowki triggered protests by family and relatives, following which the decision to suspend the cops was taken. The police have also assured the family that a magisterial probe would be conducted, even as commissioner Jatinder Aulakh said the youth had committed suicide.
“It was suicide. Someone brought this person, Tinka, to the post on Saturday, alleging that the he had stolen a mobile phone. The cops made no entry into the records and did not even register a case. On Sunday afternoon, Tinka ended his life by strangulating himself with a blanket provided to him in the lock-up,” Aulakh said, adding that a probe would be conducted to get to the bottom of the matter.
Additional deputy commissioner of Police (ADCP) Dhruman Nimbale who is investigating the case said, “The four cops have been booked under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC. Those booked are chowki in-charge Manjit Singh, Munshi Jagjit Singh, Rachpal Singh and the sentry on duty.”

“Since it is a custodial death, there was negligence from the booked cops as they did keep watch on the person inside the lock-up,” Nimbale added.
