On Wednesday, city residents will get to see not only a blue moon and a super moon, but also a total lunar eclipse, all rolled into one, provided the weather remains clear.
The physics department of Panjab University (PU) has made arrangements for the people to see the eclipse with a telescope. The spectacle can also be seen with the naked eye.
The moon will touch the umbra at 6.20pm, which gives the eclipse the distinctive look of darkening and reddening of the moon. It will remain in this state till 7.37pm. The penumbral eclipse will continue till 8.40pm. The penumbral phase is usually unnoticeable.
Chairperson of the physics department professor Navdeep Goyal said: “We have made arrangements to have a look at the moon. Any resident can come to the department. We will handle the instrumentation part.”
He added: “Children should be escorted by their parents and teachers and residents should come in woollen clothes.”
There hasn’t been a triple lineup like this since 1982 and the next won’t occur until 2037. The total lunar eclipse, which can be seen from everywhere in India, begins at 5.20 pm with what is called the partial shadow or penumbra of the earth’s shadow striking the moon.
