Gian Sagar row: Punjab govt seeks central bodies’ nod to shift students

After the withdrawal of all permissions granted to Gian Sagar medical college and hospital, Banur, the Punjab government has written to the Union ministry of health and family welfare, Medical Council of India (MCI), the Dental Council of India and the Nursing Council seeking their permission for shifting the 1,500-odd students of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The college has a strength of nearly 500 students each in medical, dental and nursing courses.

Secretary, medical education, Vikas Partap, said, “We have almost finalised our plan for shifting students to other colleges, that will be put in place once all permissions are secured,” he said.

“The plan will also be submitted to the Punjab and Haryana high court in the next hearing of the case,” he said.

Withdrawal of permissions

Vikas Partap has said in his executive order that withdrawal of all the permissions to the college was necessitated because it was not desirable to leave students without proper education and training.

“It shall be seminal injustice to the society if the doctors, having no proper medical education or expertise, join the medical profession. Such professionals cannot be entrusted with precious lives of patients,” he stated.
