They both actively took part in the political rallies of Sarabjit Singh Makkar when he was elected MLA from Adampur. Gikki also helped the Makkar family open Hotel M 1 on the police lines road at Jalandhar in 2011. Fissures started appearing in their friendship when a police raid was conducted on Gikki’s hotel — Sekhon Grand — at Namdev Chowk. Gikki alleged that the raid was conducted at the behest of Makkar.

As per the first information report (FIR) lodged by the police on April 21, 2011, Makkar along with Amardeep Singh Sunny, Jasdeep Singh Jassu and Amarpreet Singh Narula gathered outside Baba Rasoi dhaba in Model Town around 12:45 am.

Gikki’s father Rajbir Singh Sekhon told the police that Amardeep put his revolver on Gikki’s chest and Jassu and Narula instigated Makkar to fire at him. Makkar shot at Gikki and the four fled from the spot. Gikki died on way to the hospital.
