Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday claimed that "goonda raj" prevailed in the state as SAD workers and police were beating and intimidating Congress leaders before local bodies polls.
Capt Amarinder, who reached his hometown on Thursday evening and conducted a road show to enthuse his party workers for the civic body polls, said that it was already apprehended that the SAD-BJP alliance would resort to rigging in corporation and nagar panchayat polls. He said the violence in Ghanaur had vindicated the stand of the Congress.
"We appeal the election commission to take cognisance of the matter and ensure that SAD-BJP is not allowed to resort to booth capturing on June 10," he said.
Later, interacting with the Congress workers of Patiala during the road show, the PPCC chief exhorted them to vote out the "corrupt" SAD-BJP house.
He said that though the Congress candidates were being threatened and the ruling combine was indulging in illegitimate ways to capture the civic body polls, he was sure the Congress would register a thumping victory.
"I am sure that voters of Patiala will fearlessly exercise their right to franchise. It is really shameful that the SAD-BJP house miserably failed to sustain the unprecedented development made during the Congress regime," he said.
