In a relief to the national capital's residents, the Delhi high court on Thursday directed Haryana to release water, being sent here, into Munak canal which could result in around 80-90 million gallons per day of water being saved that can be used by people here.
A bench of justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Siddharth Mridul directed Haryana government to release water into the cement-lined Munak canal instead of the kachcha canal that was being used till now.
Delhi Jal Board (DJB) was directed to connect, within two weeks, the canal with the Dwarka Raw Water Pump House which could then treat and supply the water to sub-city that is currently dependent on underground water to meet its requirements.
Senior advocate Rakesh Khanna, appearing as amicus curiae in the matter, said the extra 80-90 million gallons per day (MGD), which would be saved by sending water through the pucca Munak canal, can make the water treatment plants at Dwarka, Bawana and Okhla operational.
