The health department collected samples of different food items to check adulteration on Thursday. The department's officials collected nine samples from various shops and vendors in Jagraon while two samples were collected from Mullanpur.
District health officer Dr Abnash Kumar informed that two samples of khoya burdi, three samples of milk, two of branded mustard oil and a sample of milk cake and cheese each were collected from different shops and vendors in Jagraon.
He said that a sample of “besan burfi” was collected from a sweet shop and a sample of “besan” from a store in Mullanpur.
Food safety officer Ravinder Garg informed that they warned sweet shop owners to maintain cleanliness and take precautionary measures.
"We also directed the sweet shop owners to use permitted colours in prescribed quantity while preparing sweets," he added.
According to doctors, non-permitted synthetic colours and adulterated sweets can lead to cancer and kidneys stones, besides other stomach- related diseases.

Rub the silver leaf layer on sweets with two fingers if it becomes powder then it is original. If after rubbing it forms a wick, then it is likely to be aluminium foil which is dangerous for health.
