Sensing a possible threat to law and order in the Doaba region, few sensitive areas of the district have been put under high police surveillance and police personnel from outside the district have been deployed in huge numbers.

The district is the hub of various 'deras' (religious sects), including the Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan (DJJS) in Nurmahal, where dera head Ashutosh Maharaj's body has been kept in a deep freezer after his clinical death on January 30 this year.

Since the hearing in the Ashutosh case is scheduled for September 11 in the Punjab and Haryana high court, there is a possibility of the court issuing some instructions as a result of which the state government may have come into action.

Heavy police movement has been noticed in the areas surrounding Nurmahal, Nakodar, Bhogpur, Adampur and Phillaur region, falling in the Jalandhar district.

Since the deployment has been made in areas dominated by Valiki communities, many police officers have disclosed that the deployment was because of a possible threat to the law and order situation due to tension in Ram Tirath.

Though there is no clear confirmation about the police movement but sources in the police department have said that additional police force has been deployed in these areas.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner (DC) KK Yadav admitted the police was on alert. "I cannot disclose the exact reason but yes, police and administration are on alert in the district," the DC said.
