Besides people from 29 villages from the district, members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Gau Raksha Dal and supporters of chief of Gobind Gau Dham Swami Krishan Nand held a protest rally at Ghanauri Kalan and asked the government to stop the construction of the proposed slaughter house by February 15, failing which the organisations threatened to observe a 'bandh' in Sangrur on February 16 and march towards the slaughter house.

Addressing the gathering, the leaders said that the setting up of the slaughter house will encourage cow-slaughtering and disturb peace in the region.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Vimal Mittal, president of the Sangrur district unit of the VHP said, "The Hindu organisations are united in their opposition to the setting up of the slaughter house. Our agitation will continue till the government bans the construction."

According to sources, the under-construction slaughter house will cover over 40 bighas in the village. The boundary wall of the slaughter house has already been constructed.

According to leaders of the organisations, three people - one from Ludhiana and two from Delhi - have sought the permission from the Punjab government for the setting up of the slaughter house. General secretary of Jaladhar-based Gau Raksha Dal Hardwari Lal Yadav is also sitting on the "aamran anshan" (fast-unto-death) against the slaughter house.
Baba Sudh Singh from Machhiwara, Sant Bhupinder Singh from Patiala, Sardari Lal Sharda of VHP's Gau Rakhsha Vibhag and Gurmukh Singh Namdhari of VHP also participated in the rally.
