The police claim to have solved the murder case of a 75-year-old woman within 24 hours with the arrest of her daughter-in-law.
The sharp-edged weapon used to commit the crime has been recovered from their house in Rakba village.
According to police, the accused, Karamjit Kaur, 32, had developed extra marital relations and her mother-in-law, who was aware of this, used to deter Karamjit.
Besides, Karamjit, an HIV positive, told the police that her mother-in-law’s behaviour had worsened towards her since she was diagnosed with the disease.
Giving details, Ludhiana rural deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Mandeep Singh Gill said Tej Kaur was found murdered at her Rakba village house on Sunday. The Dakha police registered a murder case and initiated investigation during which they found the victim’s daughterin-law Karamjit over reacting to the incident. When the police grilled her, she confessed to having killed her mother-in-law, the DSP claimed.
Gill said to distract the police investigation, Karamjit wrote with a chalk on a wall of her house, “I am Jasvir Dhatt and I have killed the woman as she didn’t return my Rs 5,000. The woman’s daughter-in-law is not responsible for the murder.”
During investigation it was found that the victim’s son, Jasvir Singh, was away to Raikot to attend a bhog ceremony. Finding Tej alone at home, Karamjit killed her with a sharp-edged weapon and hid the weapon under a trunk, the DSP added. “Karamjit married truck driver Kulwant Singh five years ago. He later died due to AIDS. After his death, the family solemnised her marriage with Kulwant’s younger brother Jasvir,” Gill said.
