A month on the campaign trail has been a journey down the memory lane for the wife of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Arun Jaitley. With daughter, Sonali, and relatives from Amritsar and Delhi in tow, Sangeeta Jaitley has hit just about every street to seek votes for the city’s son-in-law in his first Lok Sabha election.
Along the way, she has met old acquaintances and recollected her childhood memories. She has not had to explain the purpose of her visit, as they all know that her husband, noted Supreme Court lawyer and senior BJP leader, is in which race.
“I might have returned to the city after long but everything seems familiar,” said Sangeeta Jaitley, adding: “Moving through the streets of Amritsar, I am meeting long lost relatives and friends. It feels like Delhi.”
Most active in campaigning, she is often heard saying: “Mein is shehar dee kudi haan. Shehar de vikas lai Jaitley Saab nu vote pao (I am the daughter of this city.
For its development, vote for Jaitley Saab).” She speaks good Punjabi in a typical Amritsar style is greets everyone with warmth.
Her daughter, Sonali, has supported her well. She has gone door-to-door to ask people to vote for change. A few days ago, she campaigned with cricketer Gautam Gambhir.

Sonali tells people that the country is changing and the “Modi wave” was evident. The campaign got some colour with stars and comedians coming in to support Jaitley.
As you enter the house where Jaitley is staying, you spot a crowd from Delhi carrying the saffron BJP flags and other poll merchandise.
Ever since Jaitley filed nomination, the family is camping here and trying to reach out to maximum voters, participating in roadshows and door-to-door campaigning.
