In an apparent case of honour killing, a 20-year-old girl of Kiri Afghana village under Shri Hargobindpur police station was allegedly killed by her family following her affair with a youth of the same village.
The police have recovered the body of the girl from the Beas river near Bhet Pattan village.
Giving information, Batala SSP Manminder Singh said that on September 30, the youth, Shamsher Singh, lodged a complaint with the police that his friend Paramjit Kaur was missing for the past four days.
Shamsher said he had an affair with Paramjit whose family was against their marriage. He said that on the afternoon of September 26, he got a call from Paramjit saying her parents had accepted their relation and had decided to solemnise their marriage, so she called him to a gurdwara at Bhet Pattan.
When he was going to the gurdwara, he found that Paramjit's father, along with their relatives, was forcibly taking her towards Bhet Pattan river, on seeing which he fled from the spot. Later, he repeatedly tried to contact Paramjit but her phone was switched off.
On the basis of the complaint, the police registered an FIR and started a manhunt to trace the missing girl. During investigation, the police found that neither the parents of the girl had informed the police nor had they made an effort to locate her.

After a massive search operation, the police recovered the body from the river.
On Shamsher's statement, the police have registered a case of murder against her father Lakhbir Singh, paternal uncles Balbir Singh and Baljit Singh and maternal uncles Jagtar Singh and Sakkater Singh, who are absconding.
