The hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for rally “Srinagar Million March” on November 7, the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to address a rally in Srinagar.
Geelani’s rally on Tourist Reception Centre ground in Srinagar on the same day is seen as a counter to Prime Minister’s rally in Srinagar.
Calling it “Kashmir’s referendum against India’”, Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar said that authorities should allow both rallies.
“Geelani sahib will invite all the pro-freedom leader ship to participate in the rally at TRC to show the world that Kashmiris are against the Indian occupation,” Hurriyat (G) Ayaz Akbar said in a statement.
PM Modi is scheduled to visit Srinagar on November, 7 and address a public rally in the summer capital. This will be the first time Modi will address a public rally in Kashmir after elections in December 2014.
People are hopeful that the much awaited package for relief and rehabilitation of flood victims will be announced. Hurriyat said they will seek proper permission from the authorities and `are ready to take all responsibilities of law and order in the city’’. “We will ensure that people who want to attend the prime minister’s rally are not stopped,’’ Akbar told Hindustan Times.
Meanwhile, the government has decided that all offices shall remain open in summer capital till PM Modi raps his Kashmir visit. Also, following the Prime Minister’s visit, the traditional Durbar move has been put on ‘standstill’ mode. Traditionally, the government offices remain close in Srinagar on October 31 and open in the winter Capital Jammu in early November.
