The All India Services Pre-Examination Centre, also the Centre of Preparation for Competitive Exams, at Amritsar’s Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) receives around 200 applications, of which 75 are admitted. usually, only around 60 remain, from Amritsar and other cities.
A day after the results of the civil services mains 2016 came out, a visit on Thursday revealed that none from here has made it. However, there are many who have cracked other examinations, and that’s how the centre head, Sudha Jatinder, defined its success rate.
She said, “This centre is giving its best to prepare students for IAS, PCS, UGC and other competitive exams by providing them with experienced and better faculty than any private coaching centre. But the problem is not the centre’s failing to produce results. Lack of resources, awareness and not enough backing of families make students more ‘practical’, and they want to crack any exam that fetches them a government job to earn their livelihood. They settle for what they think they can do best.”
But, she said, neither is the centre to be blamed nor should the students be blamed. “IAS is not an easy nut to crack. Every student has his or her situations. Students with deprived backgrounds cannot be compared with the blessed ones whose target is not mere livelihood.”

{{/usCountry}}She added that Hemant Sharma and Anupreet Singh of the 2016-17 batch of the centre had cracked the PPS and ETO exams, respectively.
She also said that even private centres have “hardly 2% success rate”. “Even their student aim for the IAS but eventually realise that PCS or some other post can be cracked.”
Harvinder Pal Singh, senior assistant at the centre, said, “We get around Rs 15-17 lakh every year for the centre, and it is sufficient. Students are getting all facilities and material with good books. They have to pay only Rs 2,000 for six months.”
A student, Kapil Sharma, said, “We have to be practical. We are getting good coaching here and we will crack any clerical or state-level exam for a job, and keep trying for IAS. To get a government job is itself a victory these days.”
