IIM foundation stone function: Jaitley coming to Amritsar, state govt plans a grand show

The Punjab government is planning a big function to mark the laying of foundation stone for the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Amritsar. Union finance minister Arun Jaitley is expected to be the chief guest for the July 14 event.

The Punjab government is planning a big function to mark the laying of foundation stone for the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Amritsar.

Union finance minister Arun Jaitley is expected to be the chief guest for the July 14 event.

Apart from Jaitley, many other VIPs, including central ministers, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Punjab BJP chief Kamal Sharma, are expected to be present at the event that would be held at Ranjit Avenue.

The district administration has gone into an overdrive to ensure that the function is a grand success. Around 20,000 people are likely to be present at the function.

To take stock of arrangements, various officials, led by additional deputy commissioner Tejinder Singh Sandhu, on Monday visited the venue.

"Since it's going to be a big function, we are looking into each and every detail minutely. Today, we discussed issues pertaining to transportation, parking facilities, electricity and stage arrangements," said ADC Sandhu.

Till the time the new campus comes up, it was decided that classes would start in the building of the government polytechnic near the Guru Nanak Dev University from July-end.

First major function for Jaitley after Amritsar LS polls

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who contested the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat and lost to former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh, will be addressing his first big public rally in the city after the polls.

Jaitley had come to the city after once after the Lok Sabha elections, but had not addressed any rally at that time.

Jaitley had also announced a heritage project and a specialised horticulture institute for Amritsar. During his visit to the holy city, Jaitley will also inaugurate a drug rehabilitation centre.
