After the truck driver could not produce any documents for the 1,555 liquor cartons, he was arrested and on Wednesday produced in court that remanded him in one-day police custody.

Police were earlier working on the theory that the liquor was to be distributed among voters.

However, later the team of excise and taxation department established after verification that the liquor was being transported illegally from Phillaur to Mandi Gobindgarh by a contractor of NK Wines after he got new liquor vends during the recent draw held on March 22.

Assistant commissioner of police (west) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu said a case was registered against the wine contractor for illegally transporting the liquor cartons. "The truck driver was not able to produce any documents regarding the liquor as a result we have taken him into custody," Sandhu said.

Navdeep Singh, inspector of excise and taxation department, who had gone to the spot where the truck was intercepted, said the truck was carrying the liquor cartons without the mandatory permission.
