Asserting that the bane of being a border area will be converted into a boon, BJP candidate Arun Jaitley promised a package for the border areas to bring prosperity to the region.
Addressing a series of rallies in villages along the Indo-Pakistan border in Attari segment, Jaitley said, "There is a great difficulty faced by the farmers who have their land across the fence. The NDA dovernment had started a compensation of `3000 per acre but it was later stopped. I understand the hardship a farmer has to go through in this area and I will fight for a compensation package."
Jaitley, while addressing a rally in village Rajataal said, "Prime Minister Manmohan Singh belongs to Amritsar but he failed to do much for the border region".
Giving a roadmap to develop the border region, Jaitley said the cross-border trade should be increased, which will enhance the economic activities on both sides of the border.
"More stores, godowns and hotels will be needed to accommodate traders and cargo. All these activities will provide more employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in the area and the bane of being a border area will be converted into a boon," said the BJP leader.
Later in village Bhakna Kalan, Arun Jaitley paid tributes to Baba Sohan Singh Bhakna of the Ghadar Party which played a significant role in the movement against the British rule in India. He said that he was feeling honoured and privileged to visit the village of the great freedom fighter.
