The protesters were demanding arrest of murder accused Gurpreet Singh Kairon, who is allegedly backed by political leaders. On Wednesday, 31-year-old Swaraj Singh was found dead. Following the complaint of deceased’s brother Gurmukh Singh, a case of murder was registered against Kairon.

The relatives of the deceased alleged that the accused had hired contract killers after he came to know about victim’s relationship with his cousin sister. They further added that the accused was harassing Swaraj Singh and had also implicated him in a forge case.

Victim Swaraj was missing for the past one week, and a missing complaint was lodged at Dugri police station in this context.

On Tuesday, the Patiala police had informed Ludhiana police that they had found dead body of Swaraj from the river.

Gurmukh said, “The police have registered a case, but have not arrested the accused. The political leaders of ruling party who are close to the accused are deterring the police to arrest him, and also hampering the investigation.”

Station house officer’s (SHO) of Model Town and Dugri police station reached the spot and assured the protesters of arranging meeting with senior officials on Sunday.

Accused Gurpreet is a steel trader and used to invest in Punjabi movies. He is nephew of Ludhiana-based Congress leader, who is former OSD of former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhatthal.

Investigation officer in the case Manjit Singh, Dugri police station, said the police have launched a manhunt for the arrest of the accused.
