A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the executives of the Amritsar Bar Association here on Monday, chaired by association president Pardeep Saini.

A resolution passed at the meeting stated that the newly-enacted Rent Act "is against the interest of public at large, and is also detrimental to the interest of the lawyers' community."

The resolution noted that other states are transferring the powers of rent controller to the judicial courts, but in Punjab, the Act has transferred the powers to the executive.

The association demanded immediate withdrawal of the Act, and decided to observe a 'no work day' on Tuesday to mark their protest.

It has also appealed to other bar associations in the state to support the cause and go on a day's strike.
