The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is flooded with requests to reduce the syllabus of Classes 9 and 10 for all subjects in general and social sciences in particular.
The board seeks the schools' feedback on the current syllabus. The questionnaire is available on its website (cbse.nic.in) and schools have to submit it online by October 3. "In Classes 9 and 10, students read four social studies books, and there is a need to reduce the syllabus. We will fill the questionnaire by Wednesday," said Pradeep Singh, principal of Shamrock Christian Senior Secondary School.
Harpreet Nanre, head of the department of social studies at Guru Nanak Public School, talked about the problems in the history class. "Till Class 8, students study about India, and when they move to Class 9, they have to read about the French and Russian revolutions, a big change they find difficult to cope up with," he said.
Especially to score in summative assessment-1 (SA-1), students have to read three chapters that cover the French Revolution; socialism in Europe and the Russian Revolution; and Nazism and the rise of Hitler, so they can't perform well. "The board should make it easier for at least the students of Class 9," he said.

{{/usCountry}}"The Class-9 syllabus was huge; I found it difficult to cope up," said Mayank Sharma, Class-10 student in a private school. "In Class 10 also, the syllabus is more but the Class-9 social studies is tougher. The syllabus should be reduced for both classes."
