Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) seems to have forgotten about unauthorised mobile towers in residential areas of the city. The trust has not been able to take action against any such tower falling under their jurisdiction despite several complaints.
An RTI application was also filed by activist Gagandeep Singh Tharike in which he inquired about unauthorised mobile towers in Rajguru Nagar. As per the RTI reply, a notice was issued to a tower that was installed at 151-B at Rajguru Nagar through letter number 11825 on December 4, 2006.
Later, another notice was sent six years later through letter number 6534 on September 11, 2012. However, no action was taken against the tower during this period of six years and thereafter.
Tharike said LIT was reluctant in taking action against these mobile towers installed in residential areas, despite knowing that these could cause severe health problems to the locals.
RTI has further exposed four other mobile towers located in close proximity to each other on shop-cum-flat (SCF) 1, SCF 22, shop-cum-office (SCO) 4 and SCO 11 at Rajguru Nagar that have also been installed in an unauthorised manner.
Even the welfare society of the area had complained to the LIT several times, but to no avail.
Despite the provision that action could be taken against the building owner in case he or she fails to respond to the notices sent by the authorities within a period of three months, the LIT failed to take any action against the offenders.
