The recovery of live ammunition dumped in the Upper Bari Doab Canal (UBDC) near Sunder Chak village once again sounded an alert in Pathankot on Sunday.

The police started a search operation after some local children taking bath in the canal, a tributary of the Ravi river, informed their parents about the ammunition.

Getting the information, Pathankot senior superintendent of police (SSP) RK Bakshi sent two officers to the spot to take possession of the two AK-47 magazines, one magazine of assault rifle and 29 live cartridges dumped near the banks of the tributary.

The SSP, who also reached the spot, asked the officials to enhance and broaden the search, which resulted in the recovery of one more magazine and 75 live cartridges, besides two covers of cartridges.

SSP Bakshi later said as water flow had been stopped in this tributary for the yearly repair works, the ammunition could be located due to the low water level in the river. He said the ammunition had caught rust, but was live. “It seemed somebody threw it from over the bridge in the river,” he said.
